S. McGowan
One of the reasons I joined the NBCHPN Board was because of my personal experience with end of life care within my own family and I wanted to contribute to making a difference.  I am very excited to be on the Board.

I am also a Board member for "The Friends of Patients at The National Institutes of Health" serving the "world's largest hospital devoted entirely to research."

I have a diverse 30-year career in information technology, financial banking, and risk management with expertise in business development, information technology, operations, and organizational support.

I am currently the Senior Vice President, Chief Administration Officer for National Institutes of Health Federal Credit Union (NIHFCU) which is the nation's largest credit union serving the biomedical industry.

I graduated Phi Kappa Phi from the University of Maryland, University College with a Master of Science in Information Technology with a specialization in Information Assurance.  I also hold a Master of
Business Administration (MBA) and am currently pursuing my Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license.

Important Message from NBCHPN President

As we enter into the fall season, students of all ages are returning to school to continue their studies. Each of us involved in hospice and palliative care engage in ongoing education as we learn from each patient and family while also staying apprised of the current evidence for our specialty practice. NBCHPN remains committed to fostering life-long learning and professional growth, as reflected in our 2011 Statement on Continuing Competence for Nursing.

The statement differentiates between competence and competency; two words that sound similar, but represent separate components of a nurse's knowledge and expertise. Competence is described as a nurse's potential ability to respond or perform in a given situation, while Competency reflects the nurse's actual performance or actions in the situation. The statement defines Continuing Competence as "the ongoing commitment of a registered nurse to integrate and apply the knowledge, skills, and judgment with the attitudes, values, and beliefs required to practice safely, effectively, and ethically in a designated role and setting."

Since the 2011 Statement release, the NBCHPN Board has been working to integrate this definition of continuing competence into all aspects of our 7 certification programs, including the recertification process. Our new web-based LearningBuilder recertification program is one example of how NBCHPN is fostering continuing competence, while also answering our certificants' request for a streamlined recertification process.

ACHPNs and CHPNs due for 2015 NBCHPN recertification have already received information by mail regarding LearningBuilder as the new platform to initiate and complete their recertification process. Beginning in 2015, all ACHPNs and CHPNs due for recertification will complete a Situational Judgment Exercise (SJE), which is designed to help measure continuing competence in practice.

Watch for upcoming information about the LearningBuilder launch, as well as additional exciting NBCHPN news to be released in November during Hospice and Palliative Care awareness month.

Until then, wishing each of you rich and meaning-filled learning experiences as you provide expert care to patients and families experiencing serious illness.

With respect and gratitude,

Kathie Kobler, MS, APN, PCNS-BC, CHPPN

President, NBCHPN Board of Directors

NBCHPN to Launch LearningBuilder in the Near Future for ACHPN and CHPN Recertification!

LearningBuilder is an easy-to-use online tool you will use to record information for your HPAR (Hospice and Palliative Accrual for Recertification) application. No special computer skills are needed outside of access to the Internet!

CHPNs have 2 options to renew certification in 2015:

  • Sit for the exam in 2015 during one of the four testing windows.
  • Submit a Hospice and Palliative Accrual for Recertification (HPAR) application.  HPAR is renewal through contact hours and professional development activities.

ACHPNs must use the HPAR option.

All ACHPNs and those CHPNs who choose the HPAR renewal for 2015 will use LearningBuilder rather than the previous paper HPAR process.

This new process allows more time for accrual of points and submission. For the standard fee, HPAR applications are due by October 31, 2015.  If you submit your HPAR application and/or collect points between November 1st and December 31st an additional fee is required.

Details about LearningBuilder and the HPAR process will soon be available at www.nbchpn.org. Please call the National Office at 412-787-1057 with any questions.

Recertification for CHPPNs, CHPLNs, and CHPCAs!

CHPPNs, CHPLNs, and CHPCAs--as previously--have 2 options to renew their certification:

  • Sit for the exam in 2015 during one of the four testing windows.
  • Submit a Hospice and Palliative Accrual for Recertification (HPAR) application.  HPAR is renewal through contact hours and professional development activities.

HPAR renewal for CHPPNs, CHPLNs, and CHPCAs will continue to be a paper submission. A change this year is the extended period of time to accrue points and submit the application.  For the standard fee, HPAR applications are due by October 31, 2015.  If you submit your HPAR application and/or collect points between November 1st and December 31st an additional fee is required.

Details will soon be available at www.nbchpn.org. Please call the National Office at 412-787-1057 with any questions.
