Welcome
to the NBCHPN Certification Newsletter
February 2014- Vol 6, Issue 1

Dear Dawn ,

Thank you for reading the February 2014 issue of the NBCHPN Certification Newsletter and for your continued support of certification!

Message from the New President

Hello Certificants,

We have Kathie Koblerwonderful opportunities ahead in 2014!

In January, the Boards of NBCHPN, HPNA and HPNF met for the first time to participate in joint strategic planning and to identify opportunities for working in alliance. The three Boards approved the adoption of a common vision and mission. Read more in the message from Sally Welsh, CEO, about how NBCHPN, HPNA and HPNF will be collaborating to transform the care and culture of serious illness.

Throughout this year, the NBCHPN Board will continue the work of integrating our continuing competence model into all aspects of our seven certification programs. In addition, NBCHPN staff is implementing a new technology platform. The updated IT systems will allow for a new online system for renewing certification, and also enhancements to the NBCHPN website. More information will be coming soon about the new LearningBuilder system.

In March, we will gather at the Annual Assembly to honor all health care professionals certified through NBCHPN at the Certification Luncheon. We look forward to seeing you there!

One of my favorite quotes is credited to St. Benedict: "Listen and attend with the ear of your heart." Each time I read these words, I am reminded of the incredible gift each of you bring to those who hurt. I am grateful for all the ways you come alongside patients and families dealing with the ramifications of serious illness, sharing your expertise and providing a compassionate presence. Your commitment to providing quality hospice and palliative care is needed and valued. It is a privilege to serve you and NBCHPN this year as Board President.

Sincerely,

Kathie Kobler, MS, APN, PCNS-BC, CHPPN

Vision/Mission Statement

In January 2014, the Hospice and Palliative Nursing Association (HPNA), Hospice and Palliative Nurses Foundation (HPNF) and the National Board for Certification of Hospice and Palliative Nurses (NBCHPN) Boards held the first Joint Board Retreat in the history of the three organizations. The goals? To begin developing strategies to work even more closely "In Alliance" and to assess and identify potential opportunities for joint strategic planning. While each organization has unique duties, the three Boards believe that a shared focus benefits the organizations and their constituents. Some areas of common interest include advocacy, branding, image and communication, board orientation and board education. A major objective of joint strategic planning was to develop even more synergy among the three organizations, enhancing value for the constituents (members, certificants and donors) of each.

After a discussion about the mission and vision of each organization, both the HPNF and NBCHPN Boards approved the adoption of the same mission and vision as HPNA. The three organizations now share the vision, "To transform the care and culture of serious illness" and the mission, "To advance expert care in serious illness." Each organization will contribute unique services; however, the organizations will all be focused on the same mission and vision. This developmental milestone in the evolution of the organizations will make us even stronger, positioning us to realize our vision of "transforming the care and culture of serious illness."

Sally Welsh, MSN, RN, NEA-BC

Certified Nurses are Everywhere! National PSA Campaign Launch

The National Board for Certification of Hospice and Palliative Nurses (NBCHPN), in partnership with The National Certification Corporation (NCC) and other certifying organizations, has launched a national Public Service Announcement campaign - Certified Nurses are Everywhere!

This endeavor encompasses broadcast and cable TV, internet ads, and transit ads in major designated market areas across the country. Its purpose is to inform the public that "Nurses can be nationally certified in their nursing specialty" - such as obstetrics, women's health, neonatal, oncology, surgical, pediatrics, anesthesia, and hospice and palliative care (just to name a few.)

Certified nurses work in all specialty areas, in every part of the country, and in every health care setting, but the public is unaware of the certified nurse and of the effect certified nurses have on health care, patient advocacy and patient safety. Certified nurses directly influence patients and their families during life-changing births, illnesses, and trauma. Patients feel more confident in the care of certified nurses dedicated to staying current with the continuing changes in health care practices.

NBCHPN and partnering organizations would like to empower individuals to be more knowledgeable health care consumers. By visiting CertifiedNurses.org consumers can learn more about certification and the various specialties that proudly support their certified nurses.

Testing in 2014

The remai2013 Cand Hanbook CHPNning 2014 testing windows are June, September and December. Applications for June 2014 will be accepted beginning March 1st. The Candidate Handbooks contain information about each exam such as: how to apply, fees, detailed content outline of the information covered on the exam, suggested references for study, and much more!

Palliative Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice - An Essential Resource for Hospice and Palliative Nurse

The new Palliative Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice - An Essential Resource for Hospice and Palliative Nurse addresses what is expected of all palliative nurses by specifying the who, what, where, when, why, and how of their practice. The detailed discussion of that scope of practice provides the context - underlying assumptions, characteristics, environments and settings, education and training requirements, key issues and trends, and ethical and conceptual bases of the specialty - needed to understand and use the palliative nursing standards of practice. All palliative nurses are held accountable to the 16 standards, which provide a framework for evaluating outcomes, goals, and their specialty practice. The set of specific competencies accompanying each standard serves as evidence of minimal compliance with that standard. Additional competencies are listed for advanced practice registered nurses.
