Dear ,

Thank you for reading the June 2014 issue of the NBCHPN Certification Newsletter and for your continued support of certification.

Get to Know the Board:
Joyce Palmieri, RN, MS, CHPN

As a newly elected board member I am excited about being part of an organization comprising leaders in the field of hospice and palliative care. I am thrilled to have an opportunity to serve and represent certificants throughout the nation.

I believe in lifelong learning and, when I applied to the board, my hope was that I would learn from others while making a substantial contribution to an ever changing healthcare environment of hospice and palliative nursing. My Master's of Science degree from St. Joseph's College on Long Island has prepared me well for the challenge at hand. As the Assistant Vice President of Clinical Operations for MJHS Hospice and Palliative Care, I direct clinical practice for all staff and volunteers on Long Island and 4 boroughs in New York City.

My personal core values and beliefs regarding my vision of quality palliative and end of life care influence the way I have set goals at all stages of my career.

New Updates for Recertification!

The NBCHPN recertification process has changed beginning in 2015!!

CHPNs, CHPPNs, CHPLNs, and CHPCAs--as previously--have 2 options to renew:

  • Sit for the exam in 2015 during one of the four testing windows.
  • Submit a Hospice and Palliative Accrual for Recertification (HPAR) application.  HPAR is renewal through contact hours and professional development activities.

ACHPNs must use the HPAR option.

Beginning next year ACHPNs and CHPNs will submit their HPAR applications online, through software known as LearningBuilder.  This online process will be launched and available at the end of July.  You will now have an extended period of time to accrue points due to the efficiencies of the online process.

An additional change for CHPNs is the addition of a situational judgment exercise (SJE).

ACHPNs and CHPNs whose certification is due to expire in 2015 should look for a letter in the mail in July outlining the details.

HPAR renewal for CHPPNs, CHPLNs, and CHPCAs will continue to be a paper submission and will also have an extended period of time to accrue points and submit the application.

Details for all certificants will be posted online at www.nbchpn.org.

Employer Supporter Program

Is your organization a member of the Employer Supporter Program? Let us know how your organization supports certification. At Hospice of the Valley (HOV), more than 100 certified nurses

Newly certified CHPNAs
and nursing assistants attended a breakfast held in their honor by HOV at the Phoenix Country Club on May 21. The annual agency event recognizes nurses and nursing assistants who have gone the extra mile to earn national certification in hospice and palliative care. This year HOV staff earning their certification for the first time were 18 CHPNs, 9 CHPLNs and 47 CHPNAs.
Specialty Nursing Certification Advocacy Workshop

Spec Nsg Cert Advocacy NBCHPN and the Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association (HPNA) were honored to participate in the Specialty Nursing Certification Advocacy Workshop held on April 26, 2014 by the Board of Certification for Emergency Nurses (BCEN).

Over 30 nurses attended this workshop focused on promoting RN specialty certification by advocating its acceptance to meet state continuing education/competency requirements for relicensure.  Many connections were made during the Workshop across specialty nursing certifications.  The following certification corporations sent advocates to the workshop: American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, Board of Certification for Emergency Nursing, Competency & Credentialing Institute, Medical Surgical Nursing Certification Board, National Board for Certification of Hospice and Palliative Care Nurses, Orthopedic Nursing Certification Board, and the Pediatric Nursing Certification Board.  The Board of Certification for Emergency Nursing and the Medical Surgical Nursing Certification Board sponsored the most advocates, approximately one from each of the pilot states.  The feedback received from the advocates was very positive. Attendees at this workshop will join other certified colleagues already involved in the BCEN initiative to continue the advocacy work with State Boards of Nursing.

BCEN initiated the specialty certification advocacy project in 2010 and is pleased to continue to provide facilitation of this initiative through their consultants, KAR Associates, to all specialty nursing certification corporations and their advocates.  Efforts with varying approaches are ongoing in the ten pilot states: AZ, FL, IL, MD, MO, NJ, OR, TX, VA, and WA.

Certified Nurses Are Everywhere!

Certified Nurses are Everywhere video 2014
Certified Nurses Are Everywhere

You know-but do your patients and their families know?

  • Certified nurses and advanced practice nurses have demonstrated their knowledge through a rigorous examination - a process which includes qualifying by meeting practice or education eligibility criteria and then maintaining their credential through reassessment of that knowledge throughout their career
  • Certified nurses choose to seek out certification - demonstrating their expertise, knowledge and commitment
  • National certification is the only way to have nursing specialty knowledge validated by an impartial third party
  • Certified nurses must maintain their core specialty knowledge base and keep up with the changes in health care through ongoing targeted education and continuing competency assessments

NBCHPN is pleased to be part of the launch of the consumer awareness campaign: Certified Nurses Are Everywhere!
